"Walk to Freedom"

Description: This mosaic depicts a scene from a 1963 civil rights march in Detroit, Michigan. An estimated 125,000 marchers peacefully demonstrated in downtown Detroit. The event culminated in a speech by Dr. King delivered at Cobo Hall that included portions of his famous “I have a Dream” speech.

Leading the march (from left to right): Walter P. Reuther, Benjamin McFall, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Clarence L. Franklin. In the second row are: Police Lt. George Harge, James Del Rio (between McFall and MLK), and William Beckham (over MLK’s left shoulder.

Inspiration: I created this mosaic as a commission. Throughout January 2024, this artwork was displayed as part of a larger installation (commemorating the Walk to Freedom) at EMU Student Center Gallery. The mosaic and images from the installation are on display at the EMU Honors College (511 W. Forest Avenue, Ypsilanti, MI, 48197). The final image shows Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson appreciating the mosaic at the unveiling of the installation on January 15, 2024.
