“42”
Description: This is a LEGO mosaic depicting the legendary Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers, built as a commission. Jackie Robinson was the first player of color in Major League Baseball. During his 10-year career he earned many accolades, including Rookie of the Year in 1947 and National League MVP in 1949. He was a member of the 1955 Dodgers World Series championship team. For his outstanding achievements, Jackie Robinson was elected into the MLB Hall of Fame in 1962. Jackie Robinson’s uniform number #42 is retired for all teams, so no other player will ever wear his number, except for one day per year. Each April 15th is Jackie Robinson day, when all players wear #42 to commemorate the anniversary of Jackie’s first MLB game.
Inspiration: I have been a Jackie Robinson fan since I first learned about him as a kid. This commission piece was built for a close friend and former student of mine. He is now a physician and I am so proud of his achievements. Like Jackie in the mosaic, my friend hit a home run with his studies and career path. I am like Jackie’s teammate, there to shake his hand when he touches home plate.
